DON'T QUIT : an inspirational poem for life's dire moments ... think of the big failures of history who believed in the motto FIGHTBACK AFTER A SETBACK

There are literally thousands of examples of people repeatedly failing before they succeeded. Here are just ten more examples.
1.Henry Ford 
The first automobile Ford designed was the Quadricycle, which wasn’t fit for mass production. Then Ford founded the Detroit Automotive Company, which failed because Ford’s perfectionism got the better of him and he couldn’t stop tinkering. Ford had little to show for his work 18 months into the effort, and the company was disbanded.
Ford eventually started Ford Motor Company and built the Model A. The first batch had so many problems that Ford had to send mechanics throughout the country to fix the cars. The good news, the mechanics came back with ideas to improve the cars, and that knowledge went into correcting the future builds. “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”


 2. Orville and Wilbur Wright
After several years of building kites and gliders (and numerous crashes), the brothers changed the world on Dec 17, 1903 when they broke the bounds of gravity and flew a manned heavier-than-air machine. And this was achieved by two men with no formal engineering training. The two brothers were originally inspired by a toy helicopter that their father brought home and flew around the room.
Orville took his father on what was his dad’s one and only flight. As Orville gained elevation, his dad enthusiastically yelled out… “Higher Orville, higher!”
When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon, inside his spacesuit pocket was a piece of fabric from the wing of the original Wright Flyer.

3. Thomas Edison
His school teachers said he was “Too stupid to learn anything.” He was tutored by his mother at home. He broke all records  with  many inventions that ushered in the modern age, including the motion picture camera, the phonograph and a practical light bulb. Edison was also an extraordinary businessman too  who was an early advocate of mass production and teamwork in the process of innovation, with over 1,000 US patents( another great record) When he died all the lights in the world were switched off for two minutes as a mark of respect to the GREAT INVENTOR



4. Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln had his share of setbacks including failing in business, failing to get into law school,  being defeated for nomination to Congress and being defeated for nomination for Vice President.THERE WAS A GREATER FAILURE THAN HIM... WHICH A STING OF TERRIBLE FAILURES he even suffered from depression He continually kept moving forward, and was elected President in 1860.



5. Vincent Van Gogh 
Van Gogh sold a single painting during his lifetime, yet he completed over 800 works. Once he gave a painting to a Doctor Rey as thanks for his services, and the physician then used the gift to cover a hole in the roof of his chicken coop. Today his painting “Portrait of Dr. Gachet” (different than the one mentioned above) has an adjusted valuation of $149 million. “A great fire burns within me, but no one stops to warm themselves at it, and passers-by only see a wisp of smoke.”



6. S Honda 
Honda started a machine shop in 1937 to produce piston rings for Toyota, where he labored long hours and even slept in the workshop. To keep things going, he pawned his wife’s jewelry. Unfortunately, his product failed to meet Toyota’s quality inspection standards and was rejected. Rather than give up, he went back to school and kept working until winning a contract with Toyota two years later.
As steel was not readily available during the war, he collected surplus gasoline cans discarded by US fighters, calling them “Gifts from President Truman,” which he used as raw materials for manufacturing. Honda endured his factory being devastated by a bomb and then later being destroyed by an earthquake.The gasoline shortage was a breakthrough opportunity;  after the war resulted in people walking or riding bicycles, so Honda started modifying bicyles by attaching a small bicycle engines. Honda Motor Company ‘s revenue was $119 Billion in 2014.



7. Elvis Presley
The King of rock-n-roll  hardly needs an introduction. Yet when Presley tried out as a vocalist for the Eddie Bond band, Bond rejected him with the advice to stick to driving “because you’re never going to make it as a singer.” Similarly, Presley was told by Jim Denny, the Manager of the Grand Ole Opry, “You aint going nowhere son, you ought to be back to driving a truck.”



8. J.K. Rowling

At one point a single mom without a job, Rowling was living off unemployment benefits, had an unfinished book and two mouths to feed. She was rejected by twelve different publishers, and began to lose confidence in her book. Finally, Barry Cunningham, an editor at Bloomsbury Publishing agree to publish the book (in part because his 8 year old daughter liked the first chapter), though Rowling was admonished to get a day job because she wouldn’t make any money writing children’s books. She said, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebult my life.” Today, JK Rowling is worth approximately $1Billion.




9. Oprah Winfrey 
Born in economically troubled neighborhood and raised by a single teenage mom, Oprah experienced considerable hardship, including being physically abused as a teenager. Winfrey is a media proprietor, talk show host, actress and philanthropist. Her net worth is $3 Billion.

Keep up your morale in downtime. Success is never permanent but failure can be a stepping stone to further failure. If you don't fightback after a setback.

Whose life do you admire the most? Whose phenomenal success do you wish you could call your own? Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a peak performer in your area? WHAT TURNS ORDINARY PEOPLE INTO OVERACHIEVERS

Simply put, all of the above may  sound like Superman’s Wishlist, but they are not hallucinations or mirages; they represent what we all could be. Natural talent and intelligence can certainly make life a lot easier. Nor is luck. Whoever it is that you admire most is, in fact, a lot more like you than you might expect. Except for one thing: THEY THINK DIFFERENTLY. When the whistle blows, when the chips are down, when the deal is on the table, when they step into the limelight, they are in a special mindset.

What turns ordinary people into overachievers is the way they use their minds when they are called upon to perform. And in case you think that only athletes, musicians, actors, and other entertainers "perform," you should know that any time you engage in your work, you are performing; any time you are not alone or talking to yourself, regardless of your profession, you are performing in public. To be as successful as you can be as a performer, you will need a performer's mindset.

Peak performance mind training is essential for anyone wanting to be at their best. Over the years we have heard a  lot on getting fit and eating the right foods, but very little attention is given to train your mind. It's amazing really… because the MIND is like the source of the stream, and everything else flows downhill from there. You absolutely have to be performing mentally at your very best, if you want to surge ahead in life.

One of the most proven method of  sports coaching is the importance of "the mental game"; that players who are psychologically prepared will have an edge on competitors who might be more physically gifted. So, over the past  years, clinical psychologists have jumped into the sports arena, offering to help people work on their mental games by teaching techniques of "stress management," "goal setting," "visualization," and "self-talk."

Olympic and professional athletes who have actually experienced performing at their peak, or who realized they were stuck on the second string, were quick to consult with these clinicians about how they might enhance their games. Professional sports teams added psychologists to their payrolls. And since sports is such an irresistible metaphor among business executives, many of them former high school or college athletes, Fortune 500 companies began hiring psychologists to teach their top executives the mental fitness tricks of great athletes. Today thank God  everyone recognizes, the need to keep your mind tuned like a high-performance engine.

For most who, have accepted the incredibly durable myth that some people are born with special talents and gifts, and that the potential to truly excel in any given pursuit is largely determined by our genetic inheritance. I've found, in my work with executives at dozens of organizations, that it's possible to build any given skill or capacity in the same systematic way we do a muscle: PUSH PAST YOUR COMFORT ZONE, and then rest.That’s exactly the mega-achivers do when the perform in the critical competiton on the Olympic track or the concert stage. Aristotle had it exactly right 2000 years ago: "We are what we repeatedly do." By relying on highly specific practices, I've seen young executives, dramatically improve skills ranging from empathy, to focus, to creativity, to summoning positive emotions, to deeply relaxing.
Like everyone who studies performance, I have  been making the case that it's not inherited talent which determines how good we become at something, but rather how hard we're willing to work — something he calls "deliberate practice." Numerous researchers now agree that 10,000 hours of such practice as the minimum necessary to achieve expertise in any complex domain.
There is something wonderfully empowering about this. It suggests we have remarkable capacity to influence our own outcomes. But that's also daunting. One of the central findings of human behaviour & success experts is that practice is not only the most important ingredient in achieving excellence, but also the most difficult and the least intrinsically enjoyable.
If you want to be really good at something, it's going to involve relentlessly pushing past your comfort zone, along with frustration, struggle, setbacks and failures. That's true as long as you want to continue to improve, or even maintain a high level of excellence. The reward is that being really good at something you've earned through your own hard work can be immensely satisfying.


HOW DO YOU TRAIN YOUR MIND  TO PERFORM  AT THE PEAK OF ITS ABILITIES?

Practice, Practice, Practice. Work at getting better each and everyday. When you were learning to walk, you would take a couple steps and fall down. You may have gotten frustrated but you still got up and tried again. You do not fail when you make a mistake. You only fail when you fail to learn from your mistake. Practice intensely, without interruption for short periods of no longer than 90 minutes and then take a break. Ninety minutes appears to be the maximum amount of time that we can bring the highest level of focus to any given activity. 

The evidence is equally strong that great performers practice no more than 4 ½ hours a day. Do the hardest work first. Bite the bullet…We all move instinctively toward pleasure and away from pain. Most great performers,  delay gratificationand take on the difficult work of practice in the mornings, before they do anything else. That's when most of us have the most energy and the fewest distractions.

Next important point RITUALIZE PRACTICE. Will and discipline are wildly overrated...few of us have much of it. The best way to insure you'll take on difficult tasks is to ritualize them — build specific, inviolable times at which you do them, so that over time you do them without having to squander energy thinking about them.


NINE GUIDEPOSTS TO ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE

 Here, then, are GUIDEPOSTS to achieving excellence we've found are most effective for my personal growth seminar participants:

PURSUE WHAT YOU LOVE. Passion is an incredible motivator. It fuels focus, resilience, and perseverance.  Top performers are positive. The super-achievers take negative self-talk, situations, and circumstances, and reframe them into positive mood boosters. They look for the opportunities and lessons that come from all events in life. They learn from them and use the teachings to become more successful than they were yesterday.

COMMIT TO YOUR DREAM. Olympic athletes like all other super-achievers are committed to attaining their dreams and they have a “never quit” attitude. You can commit to your dream and make it happen as well. Have a clear picture of where it is you want to go and take steps each day in the direction of your dream. Make it a reality.

FOCUS & VISUALIZE YOUR END OBJECTIVES. Top achievers keep focussed on their end result. What is it that you want to achieve? Sometimes you will have to say "no" to pursuing an activity or  giving up a pet hobby that gobbles time but does not contribute to your end objective. At times, you may ask yourself, "Is it worth it?" What is it worth to you not to live your dreams? So super-achievers are also great time managers

CONVERT DREAMS TO SMART GOALS -Only 3% of people set goals and they are the super-achievers & peak performers. They set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and have time frame set for achievement. With each goal, take time to set a plan of action. What are 5 things you can do today to take a step in the direction of your dream???

ALWAYS GIVE YOUR BEST. The difference between first place and second place is all the little things that add up to be big things on the BIG scoreboard. There is just a hair splitting difference between the winner and runner-up in the 100 meter Olympic dash.  So refine and nurture your talents and strengths. Giving your best on a bad day is better than giving nothing on a good day

WILLING TO TAKE RISKS. Super-achievers take calculated risks and step out of your comfort zone. Train your mind to make decisions quickly but with due diligence. Listen to your intuition. Super-achievers have a well defined “inner voice” what psychologists call the self-talk. It’s a hidden tape-recorder you have within you to motivate or de-motivate you in those critical moments

GET A COACH OR A MENTOR. Accelerate your achievement by hiring a coach or mentor that will help you develop a winning attitude and set breakthrough goals that will help you get the results you are hoping to achieve. The simpler and more precise the feedback, the more equipped you are to make adjustments. Too much feedback, too continuously, however, can create cognitive overload, increase anxiety, and interfere with learning.

TAKE REGULAR RENEWAL BREAKS. Relaxing after intense effort not only provides an opportunity to rejuvenate, but also to metabolize and embed learning. It's also during rest that the right hemisphere becomes more dominant, which can lead to creative breakthroughs. People who are in a big hurry to succeed reach the other end very fast (yes! literally the other end)

CONTINUOUS LEARNING. Super-achievers discover new ways of how you can improve yourself, increase your productivity, and train yourself to be better than the rest. To learn more about your profession, listen to audios or read books  that talk about the new breakthroughs &  techniques or tips that will make you more powerful in your field.

Peak performers are driven to be the best. They know what it takes to become successful. They possess the "will" to go after whatever they want in life and are willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve them. They continually focus on getting the results they want and take calculated risks to go after them. You can be a peak performer and achieve your own personal Olympic Gold medal! Give your best to everyone and keep an eye on your end result.

Transformational leaders...are those who stimulate and inspire followers to both achieve. extraordinary outcomes and, in the process, develop their own leadership capacity



WHO DOES NOT WANT TO BECOME A LEADER ?



People have long been interested in leadership throughout human history, but it has only been relatively recently that a number of formal leadership theories have emerged. My series of coaching sessions for future leaders /scions of family governed enterprises include a comprehensive questionnaire to understand leadership styles. The feedback sessions have been encouraging in the self-realization from the coachees and the desire to change and redirect.

 Here is a summary of the inputs are give in session number one.


I ask in the coaching sessions....What exactly makes a great leader? 

Do certain personality traits make people better-suited to leadership roles, or do characteristics of the situation make it more likely that certain people will take charge? When we look at the leaders around us – be it our employer or the CEO – we might find ourselves wondering exactly why these individuals excel in such positions.

Successful leadership is the result of the interaction between the traits of the leader and the situation itself (i.e., the contingency approach to leadership. They have realized that the interaction between the leader and the situation is key to understanding leadership, along with the specification of important trait and situational variables."

While many different leadership theories have emerged, most can be classified as one of eight major types:

1. "Great Man" Theories

Have you ever heard someone described as "born to lead?" According to this point of view, great leaders are simply born with the necessary internal characteristics such as charisma, confidence, intelligence, and social skills that make them natural-born leaders.
Great man theories assume that the capacity for leadership is inherent – that great leaders are born, not made. These theories often portray great leaders as heroic, mythic and destined to rise to leadership when needed. The term "Great Man" was used because, at the time, leadership was thought of primarily as a male quality, especially in terms of military leadership.

 

2. Trait Theories

Similar in some ways to Great Man theories, trait theories assume that people inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. Trait theories often identify particular personality or behavioral characteristics shared by leaders. For example, traits like extroversion, self-confidence, and courage are all traits that could potentially be linked to great leaders.

If particular traits are key features of leadership, then how do we explain people who possess those qualities but are not leaders? This question is one of the difficulties in using trait theories to explain leadership. There are plenty of people who possess the personality traits associated with leadership, yet many of these people never seek out positions of leadership.

3. Contingency Theories

Contingency theories of leadership focus on particular variables related to the environment that might determine which particular style of leadership is best suited for the situation. According to this theory, no leadership style is best in all situations. Success depends upon a number of variables, including the leadership style, qualities of the followers and aspects of the situation.

 

4. Situational Theories

Situational theories propose that leaders choose the best course of action based upon situational variables. Different styles of leadership may be more appropriate for certain types of decision-making. For example, in a situation where the leader is the most knowledgeable and experienced member of a group, an authoritarian style might be most appropriate. In other instances where group members are skilled experts, a democratic style would be more effective.

5. Behavioral Theories

Behavioral theories of leadership are based upon the belief that great leaders are made, not born. Consider it the flip-side of the Great Man theories. Rooted in behaviorism, this leadership theory focuses on the actions of leaders not on mental qualities or internal states. According to this theory, people can learn to become leaders through teaching and observation.

 

6. Participative Theories

Participative leadership theories suggest that the ideal leadership style is one that takes the input of others into account. These leaders encourage participation and contributions from group members and help group members feel more relevant and committed to the decision-making process. In participative theories, however, the leader retains the right to allow the input of others.

 

7. Management Theories

Management theories, also known as transactional theories, focus on the role of supervision, organization and group performance. These theories base leadership on a system of rewards and punishments. Managerial theories are often used in business; when employees are successful, they are rewarded; when they fail, they are reprimanded or punished. 8. Transformational Leadership Theories


Relationship theories, also known as transformational theories, focus upon the connections formed between leaders and followers. Transformational leaders mtivate and inspire people by helping group members see the importance and higher good of the task. These leaders are focused on the performance of group members, but also want each person to fulfill his or her potential. Leaders with this style often have high ethical and moral standards. This is  a type of leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. 

 Transformational leadership can be defined based on the impact that it has on followers. Transformational leaders,  garner trust, respect, and admiration from their followers. 

Transformational leaders are generally energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. Not only are these leaders concerned and involved in the process; they are also focused on helping every member of the group succeed as well. Through the strength of their vision and personality, transformational leaders are able to inspire followers to change expectations, perceptions, and motivations to work towards common goals.

Transformational leaders...are those who stimulate and inspire followers to both achieve extraordinary outcomes and, in the process, develop their own leadership capacity.Transformational leaders help followers grow and develop into leaders by responding to individual followers' needs by empowering them and by aligning the objectives and goals  of the individual followers, the leader, the group, and the larger organization



SOME PRACTICAL TIPS:


Consider some of the following tips for how to become a better leaders and think about ways that you can implement these strategies in your worklife.

  
LET YOUR FOLLOWERS BE SELF-DIRECTIVE
Transformational leaders also provide inspirational motivation to encourage their followers to get into action. Of course, being inspirational isn't always easy. Fortunately, you don't need motivational speeches to rouse your group members. Some ideas for leadership inspiration include being genuinely passionate about ideas or goals, helping followers feel included in the process and offering recognition, praise and rewards for people's accomplishments.
 
DON’T DISCOURAGE WILD IDEAS
Intellectual stimulation is one of the hallmarks of transformational leadership. Followers need to be encouraged to express their creativity. Effective leaders should offer new challenges with ample support to achieve these goals. One way to foster creativity is to offer challenges to group members, making sure that the goals are within the grasp of their abilities. The purpose of this type of exercise is to get people to stretch their limits, but to not become discouraged by barriers to success.
 
BE A ROLE MODEL TO EMULATE
Idealized influence is another of the four key components of transformational leadership. Transformational leaders exemplify the behaviors and characteristics that they encourage in their followers. They walk the walk and talk the talk. As a result, group members admire these leaders and work to emulate these behaviors. If you want to become a better leader, work on modeling the qualities that you would like to see in your team members.
 
LET YOUR ENERGY AND PASSION BE INFECTIOUS.
Would you look to someone for guidance and leadership if they did not truly care about the goals of the group? Of course not! Great leaders are not just focused on getting group members to finish tasks; they have a genuine passion and enthusiasm for the projects they work on. Start by thinking of different ways that you can express your zeal. Let people know that you care about their progress. When one person shares something with the rest of the group, be sure to tell them how much you appreciate such contributions.
 
LISTEN WITH A CARING HEART
Another important characteristic of transformational leadership involves a focus on providing one-on-one communication with group members. Good leaders should express sincere care and concern for the members of their group both verbally and non-verbally. By keeping the lines of communication open, these leaders can ensure that group members feel able to make contributions and receive recognition for their achievements.

BECOME A VENDOR OF ENTHUSIASM
Transformational leaders have an upbeat, optimistic attitude that serves as a source of inspiration for followers. If leaders seem discouraged or apathetic, members of the group are likely to also become uninspired. Even when things look bleak and your followers start to feel disheartened, try to stay positive. This does not mean viewing things through rose-colored glasses. It simply means maintaining a sense of optimism and hope in the face of challenges.
 
BUILD ON EACH MEMBERS STRENGTHS AND CONTRIBUTIONS.
Let the members of your team know that you welcome their ideas. Leaders who encourage involvement from group members are often referred to as democratic or participative leaders. While they retain the final say over all decisions, they encourage team members to take an active role in coming up with ideas and plans. Using a democratic leadership style leads to greater commitment, more creative problem-solving and improved productivity.
 
FIND THE CARROT WHICH ALLURES
A good leader knows that offering effective recognition and rewards is one of the best ways to help followers feel appreciated and happy. It may also come as no surprise that happy people tend to perform better at work. Leaders can help group members feel happier by offering help, removing barriers to success and rewarding strong efforts.
 
LOOKOUT FOR NEW WAYS
Who says leadership is a one-way relationship? As you work toward honing your  leadership skills , don't forget to look to your followers for feedback an inspiration. Pay attention to the things that have been effective in the past and always be on the lookout for new ways to inspire, motivate and reward group members.

While these traits are often linked to effective leadership, it is important to note that few leaders possess all of these traits. Generally, a strong leader will have many of these qualities, but aspects of the situation also play an important role in determining if people are able to lead well. In many cases, it is the interaction between these traits and the situation that determines leadership quality.
 
MAKE A SELF ANALYSIS OF YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE
Understanding your current  leadership style is essential. What are your strengths? Which areas need some improvement? One way to start assessing your skills is to take this leadership style  to get a general idea of how you lead. Once you have completed the quiz, read about the major characteristics of your dominant style. Are these qualities helping or hindering your leadership? Once you've determine which areas need some work, you can begin looking for ways to improve your leadership abilities.


CONCLUSION :

The Elements of Transformational Leadership  include Intellectual Stimulation – Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo; they also encourage creativity among followers. The leader encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn. 
Transformational leadership also involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, transformational leaders keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition of the unique contributions of each follower. 
Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers. These leaders are also able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals. The transformational leader serve as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize his or her ideals.Groups led by transformational leaders have higher levels of performance and satisfaction than groups led by other types of leaders transformational leaders - leaders who are positive, inspiring, and who empower and develop followers - are better leaders  are more valued by followers and have higher performing teams.

Being a CEO is the secret ambition of most of the students who go through my CEO META COACH PROGRAM. Although financial & professional success is only one aspect of what makes an individual successful it is often used as the measuring stick.

The greatest constraint you face, whether you're in a corner office or a cubicle, is time. It's a precious commodity, and often it seems there's simply not enough time in the day to get all your stuff done, or even to make a sizable dent.

Which time describes the world in which you really live, real time or clock time?The reason time management gadgets and systems don't work is that these systems are designed to manage clock time. Clock time is irrelevant. You don't live in or even have access to clock time. You live in real time, a world in which all time flies when you are having fun or drags when you are doing your taxes.

1. Only touch a task once
Whether it's an email, letter, voicemail, only handle it when you have time to reply. If you're dealing with it when you don't have a chance to respond you're wasting your time by handling it twice and spending too much time thinking about it.


2.Take time to think and plan your days

Be strategic. Strategy is more than a buzzword. Not all the work we do is of equal value, and being strategic means making distinctions between high-priority work and less pressing work. Being a strategic worker means having specific, measurable goals, and allocating your time to activities that advance those goals. For starters, identify one key priority to accomplish every day, and begin your day with that important task
Make a List of things to do and NOT to do.Make a daily list with the 6 most critical tasks that must get done today. I started doing this about a year and a half ago every morning when I wake up. It's amazing when you really prioritize what needs to get done, how much more likely you are to achieve it. Part of the key to time management is carving out time to think, as opposed to constantly reacting. And during that thinking time, you're not only thinking strategically, thinking proactively, thinking longer-term, but you're literally thinking about what is urgent versus important, and trying to strike that right balance.

3. Estimate Each Task for time over-runs
Plan how long each of these tasks will take. Be realistic and keep track of how long they take you so that you can accurately estimate your time for future tasks.


4. Assign time slots.
Assign time slots during your day for accomplishing each task. If you don't have enough time slots in the day you may need to change some meetings or scheduled events to meet your top priorities.


5. Rethink your Open Door Policy
Re-condition the expectations of others as to your availability and their claim on your time - use an activity planner to help you justify why you and not others should be prioritising your activities and time.Challenge your own tendency to say 'yes' without scrutinising the request - start asking and probing what's involved - find out what the real expectations and needs are.

6. Complete Each Task you started or atleast to the milestone point.Systematically approach each task in order of priority and don't go onto the next task until the previous one is complete. Multitasking often leads to both tasks taking longer overall than focusing on one thing at a time.
